Snugpak Sleeper Lite

One interesting thing about a good sleeping bag that people should know is that it's not something that produces heat. Instead, a good sleeping bag traps your own body heat and keeps you insulated from the inclement weather outside. Because of this, wearing an unnecessary amount of clothing may stifle the effectiveness of your sleeping bag.  With the right sleeping bag, you should be able to sleep comfortably in 10 degree weather, aided only by undergarments, socks, and a watchcap.

The Snugpak Sleeper Lite is a great sleeping bag. It's Snugpak's entry-level sleeping bag so it's not too expensive and it's used by many different groups, military or otherwise, all around the world.  A couple things to look for:  the material.  The material from this manufacturer uses a higher grade of material and the insulation is a lot more efficient and you can pack it smaller.  As a sleeping bag ages, it compresses and may not work as efficiently as it used to, so quality REALLY matters if you want your sleeping bag to last.  There are other things you can look for too, including a multiple piece hood construction, reflective material inside, and more.  The baffling is also really important and you should always look for it.  It's the tubing that runs along the interior that helps the bag retain heat.  Some bags even have a zippered hood that allows you to pack it with clothing or some other soft material to construct a sort of makeshift pillow that will only add to your outdoor comfort.
