Genuine U.S. Issue Packs are part of the U.S. Military's system of all-purpose, lightweight individual carrying equipment that has been in use since the 1960's. The medium size pack is designed to hold loads up to 50 lbs. Measurements: approx. 20' x 14' x 6 ½' main compartment; 12'x 12' interior pouch; three tunneled 6' x 10' x 3' exterior pockets. There is also a Velcro closed map pocket in rain flap. The fabric is water-repellent. Medium pack can be carried on or off the frame. 

The All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment, or ALICE system, was adopted as United States Army Standard A on 17 January 1973 to replace the M-1956 Load-Carrying Equipment [LCE] and M-1967 Modernized Load-Carrying Equipment [MLCE]. ALICE gear is still in some limited use in the US Army in National guard and training units. While the USMC currently uses ALICE gear in training only, it is still in use by Navy and Air Force ground units. Most military forces are now using the M.O.L.L.E.
