FILBE USMC Rucksack: Best Bushcraft Pack?

FILBE USMC Rucksack and Bushcraft backpacks

Many hunters, hikers, and bushcrafters have struggled to find the best backpacks for their needs. The USMC Family of Improved Load Bearing Equipment rucksack otherwise known as a FILBE Rucksack, addresses these needs and then some.

This military rucksack with frame is the most trusted and popular main pack in military service today. It is a Marine corps issue pack and has been used by Marines of all types, from the elite forces to common soldiers, since 2012. The reason behind its success is due to how it was designed according to the efficiency needed in a field soldier's backpack while seamlessly integrating with their other equipment. As a result of this design, they can carry more without getting fatigued over long periods of time during a mission. The lessened fatigue is due to balanced weight distribution along with padded shoulder compression straps and a hip belt. This along with the durable waterproof nylon and sturdy hardened plastic frame make it a lights-out combination for use in bushcraft or even survival situations.

Now you can include all your survival gear essentials in your bag! Gone is the time of packing and unpacking time and time again trying to make all of your gear fit into your pack. Oftentimes this results in you having to leave useful equipment behind. With enough compartments for tools, clothes, food, and cooking supplies you'll be able to carry everything you need on your next outdoor adventure! In addition, the MOLLE System allows you to add and remove pouches and extra gear depending on the needs of your mission. Another benefit is that these packs can break down to the frame, main pack, waist, and shoulder strap assembly in order to repair or replace any part that is needed. This way you don't need to purchase a brand new backpack when something breaks, just buy the replacement part and you're good to go!

You also have the ability to add on any MOLLE type or USMC hydration pouch so you don't have to worry about staying hydrated. The hydration pack even has an extra compartment and MOLLE webbing so you have the space to store more stuff. In addition, sustainment pouches offer a lot of extra storage and can be mounted on the sides or front of the main rucksack. Assault pouches and GP pouches are always a go-to for smaller items. As you can see arranging this USMC FILBE pack as you need it is a key advantage and why it is an amazing bushcraft backpack.

Why do Marines choose to use a FILBE Rucksack?

A lot of work went into developing this pack for Marine infantry. This has resulted in the ultimate piece of military gear that is easy to use and even easier to abuse (trust me when I say it can take it, infantry vet here). Its extensive features are designed specifically to increase the endurance rate of Marines under strenuous conditions, whether marching, fighting, or even swimming. It was originally created for short duration operations but has now become an essential piece of equipment during long operations where carrying more supplies is essential to the mission.

Even though it was primarily designed with combat in mind, it can be used by hunters, hikers, and survivalists alike. Think about it this way, if the Marine Corps is using it in faraway places during extended periods of outdoor operations, then you should know that you will be able to count on it for your adventures. With MOLLE rucksack sustainment pouches and other interchangeable accessories, you can add additional storage for your survival kit's smaller items. The Main pack also has buckles allowing you to attach the  USMC FILBE Assault Pack giving you the ability to leave your basecamp with any needed supplies.

Pros and cons of using the Family of Improved Load Bearing Equipment Rucksack

The durable and versatile nylon construction, combined with the strengthened plastic frame, makes this pack extremely easy to carry heavy loads and allows it to be easily stored anywhere. It is also able to resist water due to its durable water-repellent material. The individual pockets allow for the organization of supplies as well as quick access when needed. The USMC sustainment pouches also allow you to distribute the weight of your load to make it easier for a long haul.

The best and the main reason this FILBE rucksack is such an upgrade to your standard rucksacks is they are as the name implies load-bearing equipment. The shoulder straps which also have a sternum strap attached, along with a waist belt are fully adjustable. This lets you customize everything to your individual build and allows for equal weight distribution and support which increases your endurance and the overall durability of the pack.

This USMC FILBE rucksack is tried and true and used and abused to its limits by our great Marine Corps. They are versatile to handle any situation you can imagine. From hunting and camping to survival or bushcraft, you, your back, and your shoulders will be glad to have carried this Marine rucksack into your next outdoor excursion.

Who should buy this Marine Corps backpack, and who shouldn't?

The USMC FILBE rucksack is definitely not your typical backpack. They are made with the highest quality materials which are durable both internally and externally to provide comfortableness for its user, who will be carrying them during long walks or hikes. If you need a very comfortable pack that can carry up to 125 pounds of weight, then I would suggest this FILBE Ruck.

It also has the MOLLE System which allows you to attach other pouches or gear to make packing easier depending on what your next adventure may be. Everything is also adjustable via straps and buckles. Of course, this type of rucksack was initially designed for military use but now any outdoorsman can benefit from the same durability and comfort. You can even use this versatile bag for hunting, fishing, or any outdoor activity where you need a load-bearing pack and it's mission essential to carry a lot of equipment with you.

If you are more of a trail or day hiker or being lightweight is the most important then you most likely don't need a system like this. You would benefit more from a FILBE assault pack as they are more your standard backpack in size but more durable and customizable.

Real-life use case of this military rucksack with frame

I once went with a buddy on a hunting trip to a place called Reavis Ranch in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. There is no way to get a vehicle back there and it can only be hiked into by trail. This is about a nine to ten-mile trek with most of it being uphill so we literally only had what we were carrying in our rucks. This means our tent, extra clothes, food, cooking supplies, water purification, etc. all had to be brought in with us.

Well, I had this exact ruck system that we are talking about here and my buddy had one he had found at a sporting goods store out here. He didn't have a very good waist belt, no chest strap, and the shoulder straps didn't look like anything to write home about. Guess who was hurting more than the other when we finally arrived at our destination? If you said my buddy with the other rucksack you are correct.

This is due to his pack not being adjustable enough and also not being as equipped to spread the weight of his gear properly. This gave him back pain for the next couple of days after arrival. Also, he couldn't bring as much with him as me due to not having the versatility of adding an assault pack, sustainment pouches, and a hydration pack attached to the ruck itself. Also, I was able to bring an extra set of boots because I put the laces through and tied them to the MOLLE webbing instead of putting them inside the main compartment.

Once we got to the location and got camp set up we ate and went to sleep so we were ready to hunt in the morning. The good thing about being able to attach the assault pack to the ruck itself other than the storage is being able to use it separately. I used it as my day pack and left the ruck in the tent for easier maneuverability. My buddy had brought his backpack and hiked in with it front-facing which as you imagine wasn't comfortable.

We had a great trip overall and he liked my ruck and features plus the fact that I wasn't in as much pain as him so much he went and bought himself the same setup! You don't realize how important your gear setup is until you are actually using and need it. Take the time to get the right equipment you can use for any situation and ensure it is set up properly and you won't end up as my buddy did.
