Pea Coat History
The Pea Coat was originally worn by sailors of European and later American navies and dates back to the 1700s. It was adopted from Britain’s Navy Reefer Jacket. The crewmen wearing the jackets were tasked with climbing the rigging to furl and unfurl (reef) the sails of the ship as it was sailing. Classic features of the jacket still exist today. The double breasted front placed buttons were placed on either side so they would not be caught on ropes as the crewman adjusted sails. The coat was also short to allow more ease of movement during this task. Even then, it was constructed with very heavy wool and navy blue in color.
