Keep your legs as warm as your top. The Level 2 layer is part of the Gen III ECWCS system and is the grid fleece warm thermal to help you stay dry. It’s the light thermal top that goes over your base layer boot and under your combat pant or shell. The color Tan 499 is Army OCP and Coyote is a popular pick for layering with Marine Corps gear.
The grid holds breaths and also holds warm air against you when you’re standing still and lets heat out when you start moving. They fit over your silk weight so they tend to be on the looser side. They make a great thermal for work, hunting or snow sports and can be used wihout a silk layer.
