The MA-1 has been the go-to cool weather jacket for over 70 years. It’s warm enough for a cold weather and light enough to wear all day. The extra full cut leaves room for a hoodie or fleece underneath.
The Air Force built the MA-1 around 1950 to replace the bulkier jackets pilots were wearing. Nylon shell, knit collar and cuffs, and no fur collar that would snag on parachute harnesses. The design stayed about same for decades and became a classic.
Flip it inside out and you get the bright orange lining. It was there so downed pilots could signal rescue crews. The military doesn’t issue the MA-1 anymore, but you’ll still see it everywhere.
