The PCU Level 7 pants are the bottom half of the Protective Combat Uniform, the system used by US Special Operations Command (SOCOM). They get mixed up with the PrimaLoft ECWCS pants constantly and really only matter if you are matching the jacket. They are a similar pant and same use, the PCU runs a darker shade of gray, the reinforced knee and seat patches are a laminated panel instead of a second layer of fabric, and the fill varies from with PrimaLoft Sport Climashield Apex based on the maker and year. Both are top-tier synthetic fill and both hold their warmth when wet.
The main features you will use are loft insulation, water-resistant shell, wide cut so they pull straight over your existing layers. Surprisingly light and packable for how warm they are. The shell sheds water and cuts wind, but it's not a rain pant. Add a hard shell over them if the weather really opens up. The full-length side zippers are open waist to ankle so you step in with boots on and zip up, or unzip halfway when you're working and start to sweat.
Size note: PCU pants are cut to go over the rest your layers. They run big. Most people size down one for normal wear.
