The Rothco MA-1 is the bomber jacket most people picture. It has a nylon shell and poly fill, so it’s warm on a cold morning but light enough to wear all day.
Rothco is well known for this jacket. It started out as a surplus store staple and ended up taking fashion by storm and never went out of style. It’s still the same bomber jacket underneath.
The Air Force came up with the MA-1 in the 1950s as a lighter replacement for the bulky jackets pilots were wearing. It has a nylon shell and knit collar and cuffs. The early ones had a green lining. The bright orange came later, so a downed pilot could flip the jacket inside out and signal rescue crews. The design barely changed for decades. The military doesn’t issue it anymore, but you’ll still see it everywhere.
The Rothco is also a bigger fit. It’s cut full, so a hoodie or fleece can easily go underneath, and it has that relaxed look with plenty of room. If you want it closer to the body, size down one.
