The outermost shell of the Army's FREE (Fire Resistant Environmental Ensemble) system, issued to aircrew, fuelers, and combat vehicle crews. Nomex face fabric bonded to a GORE-TEX membrane over a Nomex liner. Waterproof and flame resistant in one pant, which is what makes them worth having around a torch, a fuel line, or a burn pile.
This is an outer layer, not an insulating layer, even though it feels thick in your hands. It goes over your uniform and over your fleece. Cut oversized on purpose so it fits over what you already have on.
Leg zippers let you pull them on over laced boots. Integrated waist adjustment handles the bulk underneath. Cargo pockets have pass-through flaps so you can reach the uniform pockets below them.
The Gore-Tex in these was built to survive fuel. It stays waterproof after contact with JP-8, DEET, and the usual petroleum, oils, and lubricants. Regular rain pants do not.
