The full 5-piece Military Modular Sleep System (MSS) comes with everything: a UCP Digital GORE-TEX bivy, a gray foliage patrol bag, a gray foliage Intermediate Cold Weather bag, and both the small and large compression stuff sacks. If you only want to own one military sleeping bag, this is the one to get. It’ll take you from a cool night all the way into serious winter.
Every piece works on its own or together, so you only carry what the weather calls for. The patrol bag handles 35°F to 50°F, and the ICW covers you from 35°F down to -5°F. Zip the ICW inside the patrol bag and you’re at temps to -30°F !
The bivy snaps over any of the bags or all combined to keep out wind, rain, and snow. It’s 3-layer GORE-TEX, so it’s waterproof, windproof, and still breathes. Feel comfortable to use the Bivy place of a tent for a lightweight shelter.
Having both stuff sacks is what makes this a complete system. The small one holds a single bag for lighter trips, and the large one cinches the whole setup down to about one cubic foot with nylon straps and buckles. Packed, it’s roughly 19.5" to 23.5" long and a little over 10" across.

How do I configure the system for different temperatures?
50°F to 30°F: Use patrol bag only
30°F to -10°F: Use ICW bag only
For a temperature of -30°F: insert the Intermediate Cold Weather bag inside the Patrol bag
-40°F and below: Use all three components together
What does "modular" mean?
Modular means you can use the components separately or together depending on conditions. You can use just the patrol bag in warm weather, just the ICW bag in cold weather, or combine them for extreme cold conditions.
Is this waterproof?
The bivy cover is made of waterproof and windproof 3-layer Gore-Tex fabric, making the complete system waterproof when used together.
